A GEORGE III MAHOGANY WINDOW SEAT
Depth: 18" 46 cm
Height; 26" 66 cm
Provenance
Arthur Vernay Collection, New York
A very fine early George III mahogany window seat, the out scrolling arms above detailed carved cluster column legs with pierced angle brackets.
The form of this design is strongly influenced by the 'Chinese taste' which was popularised by the works of Thomas Chippendale and William Chambers. One clear influence is the design of the cluster column legs. This design took inspiration from the bamboo plant, and became a popular expression of sophisticated tastes in the 18th Century, and can be seen in furniture, Architecture and wallpaper designs.
