A PAIR OF REGENCY PERIOD ROSEWOOD SIDE CABINETS ATTRIBUTED TO MARSH & TATHAM

Englsih, circa 1810

Height : 33”      84cm
Width:   37”     95cm
Depth : 17   ”   44cm

A pair of Regency rosewood side cabinets, each with a rectangular top above two drawers retaining their original brass knob handles. The lower section is enclosed by a pair of brass-grille doors opening to adjustable shelves. The cabinets are raised on tapering pilasters terminating in distinctive pointed feet, with gilt-brass mounts defining the architectural lines of the design.

The tapering pilasters and unusual form of the feet closely relate to a pair of rosewood chiffoniers and a commode designed by Henry Holland for Mrs Whitbread’s room at Southill, Bedfordshire. These were almost certainly supplied by Marsh & Tatham during the refurbishment of the house between 1796 and 1802. The comparison places the present cabinets firmly within the refined neo-classical vocabulary associated with Holland and the leading London cabinetmakers working around 1800.
