A PAIR OF GEORGE III GAINSBOROUGH OPEN ARMCHAIRS
Depth: 31" 79 cm
Height: 38" 97 cm
Provenance
Private Collection, New York, USA
A fine pair of early George III Gainsborough open arm chairs in well carved mahogany of excellent colour and patina, covered in a gold silk damask and with carved shaped arms, standing on cabriole legs carved with acanthus and terminating in a scroll foot with hexagonal blocks and recessed castors.
This elegant pair of chairs are strongly influenced by the fashionable rococo designs of Thomas Chippendale and a similar design sketch is illustrated in his designs for seat furniture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
