Meiji Period
The interior fitted with a handled tray containing three lozenge-shaped boxes, each decorated with mythical beasts amid scrolling floral sprays on red, gold, and black lacquer grounds. Beneath is a further interior tray, worked in hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, and nashiji, depicting a kingfisher diving to catch a fish among overhanging flowers. The exterior of the box and cover is decorated with scenes of pavilions and shrines set within mountainous, tree-strewn river landscapes.
