A standing gilt bronze figure of Guanyin 觀音菩薩立像
Tang dynasty, 8th century, China
This small figure of Guanyin is shown standing with a subtle sway, the pose enlivened by flowing ribbons that fall from the hands. The rounded face, calm smile, and softly modelled body reflect the breadth of Tang dynasty iconography for the bodhisattva, differing from the more attenuated proportions typical of the Sui period.
The deity is dressed in simple robes arranged in gentle folds, with restrained ornament limited to the coiffure and a modest necklace. Hollow cast to the reverse, the figure was conceived as a portable devotional image, intended for private worship and likely carried for spiritual protection.
