Literature

Compare with related examples illustrated in Thomas Chippendale, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director, 1754, pls. XIII–XV

This rare and elegant early George III period double chair-back settee is finely constructed in richly patinated mahogany, exemplifying the early aesthetic found in Thomas Chippendale’s sketches. The crisply carved serpentine top rails rise above two exquisitely pierced, Gothic-influenced backs centred with the rare feature of a carved shell - each splat featuring foliate ear terminals, interlaced fretwork and pointed arches crowned with stylised trefoils.

The settee stands on chamfered legs united by stretchers, terminating in original brass castors, and is covered in vibrant eighteenth-century floral needlework.
