Chinese Export: Circa 1800

This finely executed pair of Chinese export oil paintings depicts winter hunting scenes, with richly dressed figures set within carefully detailed landscapes. Attributed to Fatqua, a Cantonese artist active in the early nineteenth century, the paintings combine Western painting techniques with Chinese subjects, reflecting the tastes of the export market.

Winter scenes are an unusual subject in Chinese export painting, lending this pair particular interest. The hunting parties evoke the ceremony and pageantry associated with the Qing elite, while the treatment of the landscape creates a strong sense of atmosphere. Such scenes would have appealed to European collectors, presenting a Chinese interpretation of a pursuit closely associated with aristocratic life in Europe.
