Listed in 1893 Inventory 'A pair [...] carved black and gilt stands' on the Grand Staircase
A pair of regency parcel gilt and simulated bronze torchers, the dished tops with gadrooned edge and inset marble tops above a gilded fluted stem and . carved lions heads, the bases similarly fluted and gilded, standing on a moulded plinth.
These torchers were probably commissioned after Berkeley returned from a grand tour in 1818, and when Spetchely was completed in circa 1821
The bronzed surface and gilt detail are typical of work by George Smith as illustrated in his book ‘A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration’ in 1808.
