Provenance

Private Collection , London

An exceptional quality George I card table in figured walnut and burr walnut of excellent colour and patina. The top with rounded corners cross banded inlaid with feather bandings on a concertina frame to reveal a baize lined interior fitted with money pockets and candle stands. The table standing on well drawn cabriole legs, hipped at the knees and carved with shells and foliage and terminating in ball and claw feet.

During the early part of the 18th Century, cabinet makers favoured walnut. The finest examples of walnut furniture, were constructed using burr or figured venners. Walnut furniture was prized for its intense figuring, and mellow hues.

This table is a great example it is constructed with the highest quality veneers, and is expertly carved.

Walnut is a soft wood, especially when compared to the mahogany that would come in to fashion in the mid part of the century. As a result cabinet makers needed great skill to carve Walnut furniture. The present table has carving that is particularly crisp and deep, and executed by a highly skilled cabinet maker.
